artifact: Conference Response (click to view)
This conference post was created during week 7 of EDTP 600 on July 6, 2014. It was posted in response to a query about the statement “Educators who believe that students can be talented in different ways offered the most effective learning environments.” My response was formulated after reading through course material on multiple intelligence as well as online resources about multiple intelligence. I attempted to reflect on the statement by providing supporting background on different types of intelligence as well as tie in the idea of equity within the classroom.
Rationale:
The artifact demonstrates an understanding of how students have different types of intelligence. This results in the need for multiple forms of instruction of material in order to best address each students own learning process. It also draws on social and cultural influence to show how these “funds of knowledge” can, in practice, be ways of addressing multiple intelligences.
Prior to the creation of this artifact I was not familiar with the idea of teaching to multiple intelligences. The exploration the intellectual growth and development of my students gives me insight into the types of activities and instruction will be most effective in my classroom. I now have a greater understanding of the differences in cognitive learning that my students have and can better adapt my lesson design and pedagogy to increase comprehension.
My current strength is the acknowledgement of the multiple forms of intelligence and the variety of methods I can utilize to address them. I understand how cultural and social experiences can be used as a form of alternate learning and that differentiating and supplementing my instruction with media and technology will allow for increased comprehension. I will need to work on learning new methods of teaching to multiple intelligences especially with focus on the linguistic and emotional side of learner development.
