INTASC STANDARD 8: INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understandings of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

This lesson plan, Strategy Lesson #1, was developed for EDTP 639 during week 5 and submitted on October 20, 2014. The assignment required the creation of an annotated lesson plan that was based on a classroom observation. The observation was conducted face-to-face in a Prince George’s County high school in a 12th grade Environmental Science classroom. Special focus was taken during the observation to note literacy-related strategies. Using the observation notes I developed a lesson plan utilizing literacy strategy development built around the same material observed.

Rationale:

The lesson plan was developed to include a variety of strategies that I have learned throughout the MAT program, with special focus on literacy strategies that I was introduced too in EDTP 639. The inclusion of these strategies allows for the students to gain a more thorough understanding of the content material being taught. The strategies are introduced, modeled, and revisited multiple times throughout the lesson plan in order to assure retention and strategy comprehension.

The lesson plans I had developed previously focused on content and traditional instructional strategies. Before I began work on this artifact I had never considered the need to include literacy strategies within my traditional pedagogy. Now that I have had the exposure to the myriad of literacy strategies available I see myself implementing them in all of my lesson plans. The importance of literacy is undeniable in the science classroom as all students are on equal footing when it comes to new terminology and scientific reading.

The exposure to literacy strategies has enabled me to consider how of students at different levels of reading comprehension can be best supported during my lesson planning. I am consciously aware of the needs to incorporate strategies that reinforce vocabulary, metacognition, and inference in my lesson design. As I implement these strategies in a classroom setting I will be able to learn to adapt these strategies in ways that best fit both my pedagogy and my student’s needs.
